At some point during the day, Ginny had wandered to the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Truthfully, the forest didn't scare her at all, but she also didn't fancy a trip inside it alone. She supposed that technically, she wasn't alone. Her pet pigmy puff, Arnold, sat on her shoulder, nipping at her hair when he thought he was being ignored. It had been a bit of surprise for Ginny when her mother agreed to buy her the little pet from Fred's and George's joke shop, but she was thrilled to have him. It wasn't difficult to look after him – the thing seemed practically attached to its new owner. Ginny didn't mind. What was even more surprising was that this little thing was allowed. Their first year notes had specifically said owl, cat, or rat. Pigmy Puff was sort of a new creature, or at least a smaller version of an older one, so she supposed that most people thought it was just an odd looking mouse. The teachers had to know differently though, didn't they? In any case, she hadn't gotten in trouble. Maybe it was because they liked to eat spiders and things that people generally didn't like anyway.
With a bit of a hmph, Ginny sat down in the grass, took Arnold off her shoulder, and began patting and playing with him. They couldn't really do much really. They weren't like owls which could take letters and objects to people, or cats that could chase after anything that moved, but Pigmy Puffs provided their own form of entertainment. But they were cute and fluffy and Arnold was usually full of energy.
They weren't too far into the school year. It felt like hours ago that Ginny was on the Hogwarts Express, catching up with Dean before getting that really weird letter about joining Professor Slughorn in his car for a meal. That experience was strange in and of itself. Ginny wasn't related to anyone really important like everyone else had been, she'd just been unfortunate enough to cast a bat-boggy hex in front of the new professor. Apparently, he had thought it was impressive. It had meant that the catching up with Dean hadn't been much of catching up.
Really, Ginny didn't know how much catching up with Dean she'd actually do. She hadn't seen him over the summer, but that had sort of suited her. She hadn't been torn up about not spending time with him. Ginny liked Dean well enough, when they weren't arguing. She just knew there were going to be more issues this year now that Ron knew. She'd told everyone on the ride home after last term. That was probably a mistake. Ginny set Arnold on the ground and watched him pick at ants and spiders. The red-headed girl laughed at the fluffy purple animal that she had gotten from her brothers. At least someone was having a good time.
