The air was still warm with what was left of the summer. Ginny was more than thankful to be out of the Weasley residence for once. Bill had sent his new future wife to spend several days at the Burrow to properly meet his family. It came as no surprise that this upset the females of the residence, which usually just included Molly and Ginevra Weasley, but had for quite some time over the summer also housed Hermione Granger. Dumbledore had sent for Harry to spend a lot of the summer with the Weasleys as well, and because of that there were Order members in and out of the house. A mousy-haired Tonks came over a lot for a cup of tea. Ginny wasn't entirely sure what Nymphadora Tonks was so upset about unless it was the death of her cousin (and Harry's godfather) Sirius Black, but she was sure that the presence of the part Veela didn't help the matters much at all. Ginny had sworn up and down to everyone that she would have preferred Tonks as a sister-in-law to the thing she had affectionately been calling (along with the other women in the house) Phlegm.
The red-haired fifth year sat on a bench, on one side of her a Potions book, unopened and tattered, at her feet a bag that held pretty much her school life. She wasn't a very vain person, but the bag did hold a hair brush and a mirror. Mostly, it was full of other school books so she wouldn't have to run back and forth from the Common Room, which could be a pretty awkward place lately. It held too many people she was familiar with. That should have been a good thing, being surrounded by people she knew. In this case, those people were: Ron, her brother; Harry, the boy she'd liked since she was ten; Dean, her boyfriend who she seemed to constantly be on rocky ground with unless they were snogging; Neville, her best friend; and Hermione, the girl she'd spent the summer with making fun of Phlegm but who also knew that Ginny was still very much in love with Harry who happened to be Hermione's best friend. It was a bit complicated. Then there was Seamus, Dean's best friend, which wasn't much of an issue except that Ginny didn't always think the highest thoughts of Seamus.
Ginny was used to not having time alone; she was one of several children in the Weasley family so someone was always around, and she was popular at school. It didn't mean the girl didn't like a nice calm place every now and then, and she had thought she found one here in one of the corners of the courtyard. It was the late hours of a Saturday morning and people were probably mostly sleeping still, but Ginny had been woken up by one of the girls for breakfast. After putting on a pair of jeans and an olive-green half-sleeved shirt, Ginny made her way to the Great Hall, ate a quick breakfast, and made an excuse about having to study for OWLS, which she was obviously not doing. Instead she sat with her back against one of the stone walls, cherishing the nice weather that they were still having.

Summer at the Burrow had been slightly different to normal; tenser, Ron reckoned. Having Fleur stay over had caused friction amongst a few members of the household, which of course he was still miles away from understanding given the fact that he had no problem with her at all. He didn't really see how anyone could hate her as much as Hermione, Ginny and his mum seemed to. Perhaps he was missing something- he hadn't ever been the most observant person- but she seemed perfectly fine to him. Ron had spent a good deal of the summer making up excuses so that he wouldn't have to be in the company of the girls' when they started whining about her, which suited him perfectly. It was easier to let them get on with it than trying to argue his point. He never won anyway, not when he was against Ginny and Hermione. They could wind him up with far less effort than most people; they knew all the buttons to press to get him annoyed... Not to mention the fact that he could never seem to win an argument with Hermione, and Ginny had always been his mums favourite so he'd normally be punished for any argument he had with her. In fact, sometimes he thought that it should have been Fleur moaning about the others, not the other way around.
Fleur was the least of his worries. Ginny, who was apparently slipping into the habit of snogging everyone, was now dating Dean. Dean, as in Ron's roommate Dean. It was slightly awkward when Ron had found this out admittedly, and there might have been a slight part of him that had wanted to punch the living daylights out of the guy. It was a shame really because Ron really did deem Dean to be one of his closest friends. It was a mystery why Ginny thought she could date him and then snog his face off every time Ron happened to stumble across the two of them alone. Did she really think that he wanted to see that?! He'd rather tear his eyes out, quite frankly. It wasn't that he had anything against Dean, quite the opposite actually, but seeing his little sister with blokes could never be a good experience. Dean is clearly not suited for her; all they do is snog! He had heard rumours about how they were always arguing too, but Ron had yet to bring that up with either of them. He didn't want Ginny getting hurt. His annoyance about it all definitely had nothing to do with the fact that he his sister was getting more action than him.... Of course not.
He wouldn't normally have been up this early on a Saturday morning, but Harry had been talking in his sleep again and Neville had fallen into Ron’s bed in an attempt to hurry out the door for breakfast. Ron prided himself on being able to sleep through anything, but considering he had Neville half land on top of him and had been having to listen to Harry constantly mumble about the Chamber of Secrets, he was pretty proud of himself for even managing to sleep into the later hours of the morning. It was obvious that his roommates wanted him up earlier than that with the noise they were making. Dean, however, was the only one to have been fast asleep through all the chaos. It was a good thing really, or else Ron might have jumped to conclusions about why his bed was empty.
It took him a while to drag himself out of bed, but he was hungry and he wanted breakfast. After pulling on a pair of jeans and a knitted jumper (which had been so delightfully handed down to him by Fred), he ran to the Great Hall and managed to find something to eat. Though he hated early mornings, he was grateful that he was up early enough for breakfast. When Ron didn't have breakfast he tended to be in a bad mood for the rest of the day... or at least until the next meal. Harry and Hermione hadn't been at breakfast- he knew Harry was still in bed, and he assumed Hermione had got up extra early to study or something- so it was easy for him to make his excuses and leave as soon as he had finished.
He hadn't been planning on stopping at the courtyards, but as he was passing though he spotted his sister sat against a wall. Without stopping to think that he might have been interrupting her time alone, he marched over to her and slumped down next to her. He was going to have to talk to her about how ridiculous this whole Dean situation was, and what better time than today? It would probably be the only time for a while that he'd see her when she wasn't eating Dean's face.
"So... you and Dean then?" He turned to look at her, trying his hardest not to allow his irritation to show. Maybe he'd try and be subtle… or as subtle as Ron Weasley could be anyway. "How's that going?" He didn't want to know, and he certainly didn't want details, but he needed to say something to get the conversation going. He wondered whether she'd mention the arguments. Either way, Ron wasn't planning on being this reasonable for much longer.

Sitting out in the sun was probably not one of the best ideas for a pale girl with freckles and red hair. It seemed that they were more sensitive to UV than other people. No matter how much time Ginny spent in the sun, she'd never tan, she'd just burn and then go back to being so white that she was almost transparent and passable for a ghost. She half expected to walk down the halls one day and get mistaken for one of the school ghosts, the Grey Lady or someone, though Ginny didn't think anyone could mistake her for anyone as pretty as the Grey Lady. Even shy and dead the Ghost of Ravenclaw Tower was stunning. Not that Ginny made a habit of comparing herself to other girls... well, often. She had last year for quite some time, compared herself to Cho Chang (even though Ginny herself had been dating Michael Corner at the time) simply because she knew Harry fancied the Ravenclaw who was a year older than him. And, despite the fact that Ginny had begun to date other people, she still had a bit of a thing for Harry, always hoping that he'd realize how much they had in common – how good they would be as a couple. She thought they'd compliment each other nicely. Apparently, Harry hadn't come to that realization yet.
Her thoughts were interrupted by none other than the only brother of hers that was still at Hogwarts. She told herself she had two more years including this one and then she wouldn't have to worry about his tactlessness, but that would mean Harry would be gone as well. That latter thought wasn't one she was all too thrilled about, but at least she'd see him on summers and stuff, surely, since he was her brother's best friend. And of course, the first thing out of Ron's mouth was about Dean. Ginny probably wouldn't have minded it so much if they'd worked into it, but who was he really to just start in about her choice of boyfriends. She knew he hadn't like Michael, though it hadn't played any part in why she'd broken up with him. Granted, it was pretty soon after Michael that she'd started dating Dean. But Ron had found out at the end of last term on the train home. Maybe he thought they would have broken up over the summer. Honestly, sometimes Ginny had wanted to. What was the point? And she'd had such a good time with Hermione and Harry making fun of Phlegm, though admittedly Harry hadn't done much of the making fun of. But he'd been at the Burrow with them, and sometimes Ginny had really forgotten she was seeing Dean.
The fifth year gave a bit of a sigh and turned her head reluctantly toward her brother. “Yeah. Dean. Still. It hasn't changed since the end of last term.” She really couldn't understand the fascination Ron had with her love life. It wasn't like she was doing anything wrong. So she snogged a little with the people she dated. That's what people did. It wasn't as though she was snogging multiple people. At least she was dating who she was snogging. Some people skipped over the dating part. She supposed she could see why he wouldn't be so keen on her dating Dean since the two boys were not only in the same year but the same house as well, but he'd not liked the idea of her dating a Ravenclaw either. And she doubted he'd like the idea of her dating Harry. Not that that was going to happen any time soon. She was sure he knew that she fancied Harry, but that wouldn't change how he felt about that, Ginny was sure.
“And it's... going. Any particular reason you're curious?” If she was being a little evasive, could anyone really blame her? She didn't want to tell her brother, who was already not liking the idea of her and Dean, that she argued a lot with her current choice in boyfriend. It wasn't that Dean was a bad guy, but Ginny thought he seriously that she was something fragile and always needed help... with everything. It was getting annoying, to say the least.

Ginny dating Dean hadn't seemed like as much of a problem during the summer. Ron could ignore it or hope that it went away, and he hadn't been expecting it to last as long as it was lasting. However, now that they were back at Hogwarts and there were rumours that the two of them had been arguing, he was less happy about it. He might have put up with it had they actually been suited to each other, but they couldn't seriously think that they could hold a relationship where they were bickering all the time? What sort of people did that?! Ginny was lucky that Ron hadn't try to talk to her about it before. Though it bothered him, it hadn't been at the forefront of his mind last summer. He had been more preoccupied with the new guest at his home and trying to forget about the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Not to mention that Hermione and Harry had been staying with them too. He had had things to distract him from thoughts of Ginny and Dean, but now that he couldn’t escape them snogging at every given moment he felt that he needed to discuss it with his sister.
Ginny turned to look at him, pointing out that her boyfriend hadn't changed since last term. It would have been too easy for Ron to point out that she had in fact moved on from Michael bloody Corner very quickly, and hence he wouldn't have been surprised if her boyfriend had changed in that time… but he held his tongue (a rarity for Ron, I can assure you.) He didn't really think that his little sister would hop from bloke to bloke, and he wasn't about to start an argument on a thought that he didn't even believe himself. He couldn't deny that he was a little annoyed at her defensive tone though. He was her brother; he had a right to know these things about her didn't he?! Narrowing his eyes at her, he allowed a moment of silence to wash over the two of them. Was he really going to act like she wasn't barking mad, or should he just tell her that she's mental for dating one of his close friends? Sometimes he wondered if she did it just to wind him up... First she picks a git like Michael, and then she picks one of his friends! She couldn't seriously have been interested in the Ravenclaw, and Dean and her were always arguing!
"Alright, no need to bite my head off," he eventually replied, leaning back on his hands and tilting his head to the sky."It was a simple question." And really it had been. She could have just said 'yes, me and Dean' or something normal that didn't involve her getting all defensive. If she had a problem with people asking her about her relationship with Dean then she shouldn't be bloody dating him!
It was going?! Ron groaned at her response, knowing that she probably had just said it to be difficult. She knew that he wanted information and she wasn't giving it to him because she wanted to make his life more difficult than it already was. His siblings really did drive him insane. She asked why he was curious and he pushed himself back up so that he was sitting at his full height, dragging his gaze out to the distance so as to avoid having to look her straight in the eye. He knew that this conversation would not go down well, so why was he even bothering trying to be subtle about it? Ginny probably knew that he wanted to start lecturing her about how he disapproved of the whole thing. He was going to have to be blunt. Luckily Ron was good at that.
"Well I'm going to be bloody curious if you decide you're going to start snogging one of my mates whenever you get the opportunity." He snapped his head around to look at her, hoping that for once she would see his point of view… Though the odds of that happening were slim to none he reckoned; his sister wasn't half stubborn when she wanted to be. "And don't think I haven't heard the rumours about how you're arguing all the time... That doesn't sound like a good relationship to me. " While he had been trying to make a point and was obviously irritated, somewhere deep within Ron's voice there was the faintest sign that he cared. Friend or not, if Dean hurt his sister then he'd be getting a smack.

Ron meant well, Ginny knew that. But sometimes he just got under her skin and there wasn’t anything that could persuade her that he didn’t try to push her buttons. Like with this thing about Dean. Granted, Ginny’s relationship with the 6th year boy wasn’t perfect, but what relationship was? Maybe Ron just didn’t get relationships - wouldn’t be the first time he didn’t really understand what Ginny was doing or how she was feeling or anything. And truthfully, Ginny wasn’t in love with Dean, but she did like the boy. If she couldn’t date Harry, she’d date someone who cared about her, and Dean seemed to be someone who cared about her. On top of that, so far, he wasn’t a sore loser like Michael had been, though admittedly Ginny would probably never find out since they were in the same House. Ginny wasn’t sure how she was supposed to respond to Ron not liking the fact that his sister was seeing one of his friends, but really, it wasn’t as though she was dating someone really close to him. If Harry has asked her before Dean had there was no way Ginny would have said no. Ron would have just had to deal with it. Still, she didn’t see a huge issue with this arrangement. It wasn’t like she was planning a wedding or anything.
“I really don’t see why it’s such a big deal to you. I mean, I get it. He’s in your year. So what? He probably talks to Seamus more and I don’t think he’s going to be telling you about anything personal. You’re just mad because someone actuallywants to snog me, aren’t you?” Admittedly, Ginny wasn’t being very nice right now, but she didn’t enjoy the thought of her brother, or any of her brothers for that matter, trying to control her romantic life. Not that her life was even that romantic. And it wasn’t as though she was jumping in bed with anyone either. Okay, so she’d started seeing Dean not long after the Michael incident, but Michael just wasn’t the person for her. Briefly she thought that Dean really wasn’t the one for her either, but since she couldn’t have the person she thought was for her, she settled for now. “You’re just mad because no one wants to snog you.” Mean comment accomplished. She knew she as going to get hell for that but at the moment she didn’t really care. If there was anything that Ron should have cared about it was how much the person she dated cared about her. Not whether or not they were right for each other.
Ginny’s eyes narrowed at the only brother in Hogwarts that she had now since the twins had gone off to do their own thing and would have graduated by now anyway. Snogging his friends whenever she got the chance? That was rich. “Well that sort of just leaves Michael who you said you didn’t like and the Slytherin House. Shall I go ask Malfoy? Would that make you happy?” That was low. She thought she might regret that later, but she’d deal with that when the moment came. Even the thought of asking Malfoy to do any kind of social activity, let alone date, made Ginevra Weasley want to cringe. She’d never kiss slime, so it was sort of an empty threat, but she didn’t want Ron to think that he could just tell her who to be with. She gave a snort at the comment about her arguing not making a good relationship. “Says the guy who’s never had one. If you’re so good at picking out my boyfriends, why don’t you tell me whoyou’d like me to date? Hmmm?” She crossed her arms over her chest. If he thought he knew who she’d best be suited for then he could pick the guy out. Not that Ginny was leaving Dean for any reason that Ron could give her.

Yes, Dean did speak to Seamus more than he did Ron, but he still considered them to be fairly decent friends. People didn't have to be best friends for them to care about what the other was up to, did they?! It wasn't just the worry that Dean would try and tell him all about his relationship with Ginny (though this did bother Ron, even if he knew that it was unlikely to happen), but also the fact that his friends seemed to be more interested in his sister than they were him. Wasn't she meant to be really popular and stuff? Ron would have thought that she'd be able to find a boyfriend in her own year. Of course deep down he knew that he probably wouldn't approve even if she did, but his point still stood.
"That's not the point, and you know that it's not the point," he replied dismissively. In all honesty Ron had forgotten what his point was... Not that he was planning on admitting that to his sister. It seemed that his argument was all but dwindling into insignificance and he was beginning to wish that he had never bothered to talk to his sister about it at all. Maybe he could talk to Dean... It might be slightly uncomfortable granted, but at least he would actually listen. Ginny never seemed to listen to Ron when he was actually trying to help and do what older brothers were meant to do. Her next comment made him snap his head around to look at her, his irritation suddenly doubling within a nanosecond. "That's not funny, Ginny," he stated flatly, dragging his gaze away to prevent him from saying something that he didn't want to say. "Anyway, this isn't about me!" He was not going to go into that conversation with his little sister, especially when she embarrassingly had a point . No one wanted to snog him, which didn't exactly make him feel very good about himself in all honesty. But really, there were some right nutcases in the school and even they didn't seem to want to snog him! Of course that was completely irrelevant to this whole conversation...
Ron had only ruled out Dean and Michael! It wasn't like he was actually encouraging her to start dating people in Slytherin. He'd sooner jump off of Hogwarts bridge than have to witness that. If she had to date anyone (though really he didn't understand why she needed to) then there were plenty of other people to choose from. To be honest, Ron couldn't think of someone who he would actually want to date his sister off the top of his head, but he was sure that there must have been someone. "Malfoy? What the bloody hell is wrong with you?! You can't just go around picking random people to date!" First she picked Michael and then, when that didn't work out, she picked Dean... Now she's talking about her boyfriends as though she has to keep picking them out until she finds one suitable enough. Granted Ron didn't know a lot about relationships, but she was hardly helping him warm to the idea of her dating, was she? How many boys was she planning on getting around before she gave it a rest?! The thought made him cringe.
Ron didn't know who he'd like her to date, and she was right: he had never had a girlfriend. If the fact that he was having to talk about this with his sister wasn't embarrassing enough, he also had to admit that she had had more relationships than he had. It was humiliating. He groaned impatiently, trying to find a decent response to her question. He didn't see why his personal life was relevant to this at all anyway. "Why do you even need a boyfriend?! It's not like you actually love Dean or anything, is it?" He hadn't meant that as an actual question, of course. He had just kind of presumed that she didn't love him. She was only fifteen for Merlin's sake.

Ginny Weasley wasn’t playing fair. And she knew that. But what did her brother expect? Fred and George could be a bit nosey but they hadn’t actually told her not to date anyone. And she’d only gone out with two people, Dean included. It hadn’t been her idea to start dating people anyway - Hermione had brought it up when they’d been talking about Harry. Truthfully, Ginny still really liked Harry and was pretty sure that she wasn’t going to stop liking Harry. She hadn’t given up on him but she couldn’t wait around for him to notice her either. Ginny didn’t think Ron would like it too much if Ginny started going out with his best friend anyway, not that she would let that get in the way if Harry actually did like her. She wasn’t going to leave Dean just for Harry though either, even if they did seem to be arguing more and more with every day. Anyway, why was Ron so interested in her romantic life anyway? No one else (that she was related to) had much issue with her dating.
What other reason could Ron have for not wanting Ginny to date? It wasn’t her fault that he was single. She wasn’t hurting anyone dating Dean. He was only a year older than her, what was a year? Was she limited to just fifth year students? That could get a bit annoying. She thought it was sort of normal for a girl to date someone a little older. And Dean was a good guy. She might argue with him a bit… a lot… but he was clean and respectful (sometimes a little too respectful). She could do a whole lot worse than Dean Thomas. Ginny gave her eyes a sarcastic roll. “Of course this is about you. You’re the one who has a problem with the people I date.”
The fifth year girl wasn’t picking boys at random, though if she looked at it from her brother’s perspective, she probably would have been able to see where he might get that idea. “That was a joke, Ron. I can’t believe you actually think I’d go around dating prats like Malfoy. I would hope even you would know me better than to think I’d go out with someone like him.” Surly Ron hadn’t thought Ginny was serious about dumping Dean and having a snog with Malfoy. That would be absolutely insane. It was sort of common knowledge that Ginny held to that very unnecessary but very real House prejudice. She hated Slytherins just for being in that house and she was definitely not afraid to kick some Slytherin bum on the Quidditch Pitch. If she’d have anything to do with Malfoy it would be to knock him off his broom during a match. “And I’m not picking random people. Michael and I had Quidditch in common and then when he turned out to be a sore looser I sort of thought it might be a good idea to end it seeing as I’m in Gryffindor and he’s in Ravenclaw and let’s face it, they’re team isn’t that great. And I didn’t choose Dean at random either. He’s a very well put together guy. I thought you’d actually approve of this one.”
The red-haired sister sighed and looked at her brother. “I don’t need a boyfriend. And no, I don’t love Dean. But I don’t dislike the guy either. So I don’t see the harm in dating him.” She didn’t mention that the person she did want to go out with and quite possibly loved, though that was a bit of a strong term, didn’t see her like that. Harry just thought of Ginny as Ron’s little sister. “Anyway, aren’t you supposed to see a couple of people before you settle down with someone? Are you telling me you wouldn’t if someone asked you?”
